The Entrance into Spain is a parchment codex made in the Veneto region of Northern Italy in the mid-fourteenth century. The Entrée d'Espagne (“Entrance into Spain”) is an epic poem in Franco-Venetian, the French literary language of northern Italy, describing the legendary early adventures of Roland in the service of the Frankish king Charlemagne. The manuscript originally belonged to the Gonzaga family, the ruling dynasty of Mantua. It is generously illustrated with 375 miniatures and three historiated initials.
