Completed in Germany in 1478 and signed by its scribe and illuminator, the Washington Haggadah is a manuscript of the texts and ritual instructions for the Jewish Passover seder. It is a mature work of Joel ben Simeon, a prolific scribe active in Germany and Italy and most famous for his illumination of the Ashkenazi Haggadah. The Washington manuscript features ten decorative headpieces with either painted or penwork filigree and fifteen vignettes depicting activities associated with the seder and the biblical scene of the prophet Daniel in the lions' den.
