The Vidal Mayor is an extensively illuminated manuscript of the law code promulgated by James I, King of Aragon. The Getty manuscript, a Navarro-Arogonese translation of the lost Latin text, provides unique insight into the legal customs of Aragon at a time of legal interactions among Christians, Jews, and Moslems. It was copied by Michael Lupi de Çandiu and illuminated around 1290-1310 in one of the urban centers of northeastern Spain. It boasts 156 historiated initials in the French Gothic style. The extenders into the margins include hundreds of whimsical figures.
