Juan de Herrera, royal architect at the court of King Philip II of Spain, created the autograph manuscript of his Treatise on Architecture and Machinery while overseeing the construction of the Royal Palace and Monastery of San Lorenzo at El Escorial near Madrid between 1567 and 1577. King Philip had a particular interest in architecture, and Herrera composed it to explain the architectural principles and machines used to build the El Escorial complex to the king. The text includes six diagrams.
