Made around 1615, the Tournament Book of Kraichgau Knights is a picture book focused on a series of duels on horseback involving aristocrats from the Kraichgau region of southwestern Germany. The depicted tournaments appear among pages given over entirely to heraldry—the coats of arms of princes and knights. Modeled on printed books of heraldry and drawing directly from the tournament book of Georg Rüxner first published in 1530, it bristles with vibrant color that sets its sixty-three pages of images apart from its monochrome predecessors.
