The Cleveland manuscript of the Tales of a Parrot (or Tuti-Nama) was painted for the Mughal emperor Akbar around 1560 and is the most profusely illustrated copy of the text. The story is told as fifty-two moralizing tales narrated by a clever parrot over fifty-two consecutive nights, instructing its owner, Khujasta, to remain faithful to her husband in his absence. The manuscript boasts 211 miniatures. The bright, detailed narrative miniatures, which reflect Persian and Indian styles, were painted by more than forty artists supervised by two Persians.
