The Stivini Codex is an inventory—meticulously compiled in 1540-1542 and handsomely written listing by Odoardo Stivini—of 1620 objects in the ducal palace at Mantua. Of particular interest are the contents of the studiolo and grotto of the recently deceased Isabella d'Este, consort of Francesco II Gonzaga, Marquis of Mantua. The studiolo ("little study") was a private room designed to showcase Isabella's art collection, with frescoes especially commissioned for the room. The grotto was similarly a showcase for her art collection. Every page of the inventory features painted embellishment.
