The Small Heidelberg Song Manuscript is a collection of medieval German love songs (a genre called Minnesang). It was compiled in Alsace around 1260-1270 and includes songs by thirty-four named poets. It is thus a hugely valuable resource for those studying this oral tradition. The songs–Minnelieder–often describe unrequited or forbidden love reflecting the interest in courtly love found throughout medieval Europe. The manuscript includes poems by Reinmar der Alte (Reinmar the Elder) and Walther von der Vogelweide, widely regarded as two of the greatest classical Minnesänger.
