The Simancas Fragment contains fragments of music composed for the vihuela, a historic stringed instrument from Spain. The manuscript, copied around 1560, was discovered among documents from the personal collection of Isabel of Valois, consort of Philip II, King of Spain. The two fragments contain music written in six-line Italian tablature, including a set of variations on Guárdame las vacas by Luis de Narváez, and lyrics of three songs, serving as a valuable testament to sixteenth-century Spanish musical tradition.
