The text of the Siege of Rhodes manuscript recounts the Ottoman army's 1480 blockade of the island through the eyewitness account of Guillaume Caoursin, vice-chancellor of the Christian Order of the Hospitallers of Jerusalem. After the siege, the Ottoman Sultan's son Djem (Zizim in the text) sought asylum in Rhodes under the protection of the Grand Master of the Hospitallers, Pierre d'Aubusson, who commissioned the manuscript. The Master of Cardinal Bourbon, working in Paris around 1482-1483, is responsible for the lavish program of illumination, which includes fifty-two full-page miniatures.
