The San Lazzaro Alexander Romance is one of the oldest extant manuscripts of the epic of Alexander the Great in Armenian, a translation of the legend from the original Greek and enhanced by a poetic commentary. It is believed to have been produced in greater Armenia in the early fourteenth century, though the location of its production is uncertain. The artist-scribe of this richly illuminated book identifies himself as Deacon Nerses. Its 112 miniatures show Byzantine stylistic influence, and their narratives are of key importance for studying the pictorial tradition of Alexander.
