The Saint Petersburg Latini is an illuminated encyclopedia made in Thérouanne in the second decade of the fourteenth century. The Florentine scholar Brunetto Latini compiled its immense body of information addressing various topics, including history, ethics, and government. The manuscript, one of more than thirty surviving manuscripts of the popular French text, boasts 115 miniatures in northern French Gothic style—with burnished gold or diapered (geometrically pattered) backgrounds—in a palette dominated by red, blue, and gold. It is famous for its twenty-six miniatures of animals.
