Commissioned by Herman I, Landgrave of Thuringia, and his second wife, Sophia, Duchess of Bavaria, the Saint Elizabeth Psalter is one of the earliest in a distinguished line of deluxe Christian psalters created for the German-speaking aristocracy of the thirteenth century. Made in the early years of the century, perhaps at the Benedictine monastery at Reinhardsbrunn, the manuscript is sumptuously illuminated with fifteen full-page miniatures and seven smaller miniatures and historiated, inhabited, and decorated initials. It owes its name to its probable second owner, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary.
