The Rylands Haggadah is a sumptuously illuminated manuscript of the collected texts and instructions for the seder, the ceremonial meal that inaugurates the Jewish holiday of Passover. It was created in Catalonia around 1330-1340. It boasts dozens of painted or pen-flourished headpieces, sometimes accompanied by figures or with painted foliate extensions into the margins, sometimes populated by amusing creatures. Its thirteen full-page miniatures present the narrative of the biblical book of Exodus up to the roasting of the Passover lamb and scenes of the contemporary preparations for the seder.
