The Portolan Chart by Jacopo Vesconte Maggiolo maps the European and North African coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the coastlines of the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Presumably made in Genoa, the chart is signed by Maggiolo and dated 1602. It may have been made much earlier, though, because the date is written over an erasure. Genoa's crescent-shaped harbor is clearly represented in the map's bird's-eye view of the city. The chart's embellishment is charming, including images of kings, a row of colorful tents across Africa, and ships with billowing sails in the Atlantic.
