The Book of the Sea is the manuscript of Pîrî Reis's manual on the coastlines and islands of the Mediterranean Sea presented to Süleyman I, the "magnificent," Sultan of the Turks. Made in Istanbul around 1526, it is a copy of the second version of the text, expanded and rendered into verse by Seyyid Muradi. Reis, a renowned Ottoman seafarer and cartographer, described his book on the science and art of navigation as "a present" to the sultan. The manuscript boasts 215 maps. Chapter headings and tables are framed with gold.
