Printed in Nuremberg in 1493, the Nuremberg Chronicle is a history of the world extending from Creation to the year of its publication by the humanist and physician Hartmann Schedel. The large volume, printed by Anton Koberger, comprises more than 1800 illustrations made from 645 woodcut panels, making it the most extensively illustrated incunable (i.e., a European book printed before 1501). The images—biblical scenes, portraits, genealogies, and contemporary cityscapes—were made from woodcuts by the prolific Nuremberg artists Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff.
