The Mazarin Bible is an outstanding copy of the famous Gutenberg Bible (or 42-line Bible). Produced by Johann Gutenberg and Johannes Fust around 1453-1454 in Mainz, the 42-line Bible is the first book printed in Europe with movable type, a milestone in the communication of ideas. The Paris copy, one of 180 copies of this first printed edition of the Latin Vulgate Bible, is adorned with dozens of large hand-painted initials featuring curling acanthus leaves with penwork flourishing and hundreds of smaller pen-flourished initials.
