The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes was first published in Antwerp by Martín Nucio in 1554. It is significant as the first picaresque novel (rogue's tale, from the Spanish picaro for rogue). It tells the story in the first person of Lazarillo, a Salamancan boy of humble origins who becomes an expert petty thief. This edition comprises the original text plus a sequel of 1555, which continues the narrative. The Catholic Church and the Spanish aristocracy are subjects of the tale's satire, and the book was included on the Spanish Inquisition's List of Prohibited Books.
