The Letters of Saint Boniface is one of the earliest surviving manuscripts of the correspondence of Saint Boniface, including letters between Boniface and his successor as archbishop of Mainz, Saint Lullus. Written in the mid ninth century, the compilation was most likely copied from originals in Mainz. The anonymous copyist wrote a neat Caroline Minuscule. A palindromic text in display script remains a mystery (fol. 39v). A number of passages have been marked with a cross or monogram in the outer margin.

International social justice movements and the debates that ensued prompted us to start considering the contents of our website from a critical point of view. This has led us to acknowledge that most of the texts in our database are Western-centered. We have asked the authors of our content to be aware of the underlying racial and cultural bias in many scholarly sources, and to try to keep in mind multiple points of view while describing the manuscripts. We also recognize that this is yet a small, first step towards fighting inequality.

If you notice any trace of racist or unjust narratives in our communications, please help us be part of the change by letting us know.

Sancti Bonifacii epistolae

Graz: Akademische Druck- u. Verlagsanstalt (ADEVA), 1971

  • Commentary (German) by Unterkircher, Franz
  • This is a partial facsimile of the original document, Letters of Saint Boniface: the facsimile might represent only a part, or doesn't attempt to replicate the format, or doesn't imitate the look-and-feel of the original document.

In the commentary, Dr Franz Unterkircher ends with a concordance which lists all the letters in the order in which they appear in the manuscript with cross references to the editions of Serarius and of the M.G.H. (the italics used in the section show that the manuscript is the unique source for over 60 of the texts it contains).
