The Leitura Nova (“New Reading”) is a vast compendium of copies of documents relating to the administration of Portugal and other legal affairs arranged into sixty-one volumes by region and topic. Begun at the behest of Manuel I, King of Portugal, in 1504 and continued under his son and successor John III, the project was completed in 1553. Most volumes boast a painted incipit page with border decoration in Flemish style featuring putti, acanthus ornament, landscapes, naturalia, and coats of arms—including contributions attributed to António de Holanda and Alvaro Pirez.
