This collection of maps is part of the archival materials generated by the management and administrative actions in the Spanish overseas territories, from the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Antilles to the emancipation of the various provinces. These documents are housed in the General Archive of the Indies.
The rapid expansion and occupation of territory, largely completed by the mid-16th century, was matched by a parallel process of colonization and establishment of a broad network of permanent urban settlements across the continent, stretching from north to south and from east to west.
The three maps describe:
- Urban drawings of La Serena de Coquimbo (1743) - 23 x 40 cm
- Drawing of Concepcion de Chile (1752) - 41 x 59 cm
- Views of the Church and Convent of the Carmelitas de la Cañadillas de Santiago de Chile (1763) - 54 x 75 cm
We have 1 facsimile edition of the manuscript "Landscapes and Urbanism of Colonial Chile": Paisajes y urbanismo del Chile Colonial facsimile edition, published by Testimonio Compañía Editorial, 2001
