The Hastings Hours, with sixty-seven borders illuminated in the Ghent-Bruges style, is named for its first owner, William Hastings, courtier to Edward IV, King of England. Probably made in Ghent around 1480, it is a manuscript of prayers assembled for private Christian devotion centered on the Hours of the Virgin, a series of prayer services focused on the Virgin Mary. It is a lavishly illuminated volume with twenty-eight full-page miniatures attributed to the Master of the First Prayer Book of Maximilian. Among the painted borders are scenes depicting contemporary court life.
