The Gothic Alphabet of Mary of Burgundy is a manuscript on paper containing a striking calligraphic alphabet. It was made in the southern Low Countries around 1480. The twenty-four impressively large Gothic letters are inhabited with pen-and-ink figures that cavort within tendrils of vines while playing instruments and games of hide-and-seek, offering refreshments, brandishing weapons, and more. The ludic book is furnished with short didactic texts inspired by the adjoining letter of the alphabet and was likely made for Mary, Duchess of Burgundy, the only child of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy.
