The Gospels of Matilda is named after Matilda di Canossa, Countess of Tuscany, who had it made around 1075 for the monastery of San Benedetto in Polirone. It contains the Christian Bible's accounts of Christ's life, to which a liber vitae ("book of life") has been added, a list of people associated with the monastery. The manuscript is famous for its miniatures, eleven executed entirely in red and gold, and its depiction of the Cleansing of the Temple (fol. 84r) preceding the Gospel of John.
