The Gospel Lectionary from Saint Peter in the Black Forest is a Christian liturgical manuscript of readings from the biblical accounts of the life of Christ for use at Mass, the sacrament at which bread and wine are consecrated and consumed. Produced in Germany around 1200, the manuscript features twelve imposing full-page miniatures of scenes from the life of Christ and early Church history in a palette dominated by bright blue and gold leaf. Each miniature is followed on the facing page by a painted initial—historiated, inhabited, or decorated.
