Ernst Theodor Langer, a German librarian who would later work as director of the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel, compiled the Family Book of Ernst Theodor Langer—a collection of letters, quotations, family history, drawings, and other writings—while traveling across Europe between 1769 and 1776. Written by many people at many different locations, the inscriptions within the notebook were gathered from friends and family—including writers, composers, and linguists—whom Langer met while on the trip, providing an insight into his development as an intellectual.
