The Fables by Aesop of ca. 1476 is the only early printed edition in both Latin and German of the biography of Aesop, the Greek fable collector, and the allegorical animal tales associated with his name. The edition was edited by Heinrich Steinhöwel, who prepared the German translations of the Latin texts. Printed in Ulm by Johann Zainer around 1476, it features 191 woodcut illustrations that have been expertly hand-colored, probably under the supervision of Zainer. The painter used washes of varying intensity to create remarkably atmospheric scenes.
