The Eton Choirbook is a rare collection of Christian Latin liturgical music to survive the English Reformation. Nearly half the leaves are now lost, as are twenty-nine of its original ninety-three musical compositions. It was compiled around 1500 for use at Eton College, perhaps at the behest of the college’s Provost, Henry Bost. It is an important source of polyphonic music focused on the Virgin Mary, including elaborate settings of the Canticle of Mary (Magnificat), sung at the evening prayer service of Vespers. The painted letters feature foliate designs, singing figures, dragons, and birds.
