Surviving in fragments today, the Durham Gospels is one of the earliest decorated Christian Gospel books created in the British Isles, likely produced in the Lindisfarne monastery in the late seventh or early eighth century. It is a remarkable testament to the impressive manuscript culture that flourished in early medieval Britain, and the two surviving illustrations—an incipit page and a crucifixion scene—are exemplary of the colorful, stylized figures and complex knotwork that mark the Insular or Hiberno-Saxon artistic style.
