The De Re Rustica (“On Rural Affairs”) manuscript in the Biblioteca Vallicelliana is a splendidly illuminated copy of a treatise on agriculture and farming, including soil management, tree cultivation, and beekeeping. Made in the fifteenth century, probably in Florence, it may have been commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV. This opening page features a historiated initial of the text’s author, Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella, with a full border in the Italian humanist white vine-stem style. Thirteen more historiated initials feature scenes of agricultural activity.
