The Marciana Manuscript is a lavishly illuminated copy of the Divine Comedy, the long Christian moralizing poem by Dante Alighieri describing the poet's journey through the underworld. It was created in the Veneto, perhaps in Venice, in the last quarter of the fourteenth century. Its large pages accommodate the text in two columns and 175 miniatures, the work of three anonymous painters all working in the tradition of the fresco painter Altichiero. The miniatures occupy one column or extend across both columns, often embracing the lower margin.
