The Convocation of Vatican II (the papal bull Humanae salutis), signed by Pope John XXIII on Christmas Day 1961, called for the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, which opened the following year. The full-page frontispiece presents the pope's coat of arms, featuring a lion guardant (in profile with its head turned to the viewer) and a tower between fleurs-de-lis. The border includes the symbols of the four evangelists–authors of the Christian Bible's Gospels–in the corners.
