During his second visit to America in 1894-1895, Antonin Dvorák composed his Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra B minor op. 104. The work, written for his friend and cellist Hanuš Wihan, not only showcases Dvorák's musical impressions of the country but also reflects his nostalgia for his homeland. Indeed, the composer incorporated into the work elements of folk music from both the United States and his native Czech Republic. Despite his initial doubts about the cello's capabilities as a solo instrument, Dvorák managed to create an exceptional composition that remains popular in orchestral performances today.
