The Collective Indulgence for the General Hospital was produced in 1590, 78 years after the unification of Valencian hospitals at the behest of Ferdinand II, King of Aragon. Awarding papal privileges, the indulgence is "collective" because a group of prelates granted it. The indulgence has a painted border, punctuated by the coats of arms of Pope Sixtus V and Ferdinand and three roundels with Christian subjects. One depicts Christ presenting the crown of thorns to the Virgin Mary, an image that recurs throughout historic paperwork relating to the General Hospital.
