The Chants royaux du Puy Notre-Dame d'Amiens is a lavish manuscript crafted in France during the 16th century, featuring 49 full-page miniatures. This royal manuscript was commissioned by Louise of Savoy, the mother of King Francis I, and includes remarkable miniatures by the renowned artist Jacques Platel. During a visit to Amiens, it seems that Louise of Savoy was so taken by the paintings that adorned the cathedral and honored poems dedicated to the Virgin that she requested some of these artworks from the town’s officials.
In response to her request, they decided to commission an opulent manuscript on fine vellum that would include both the exquisite paintings and the accompanying poems. The 49 full-page illustrations were expertly executed by the renowned miniaturist Jacques Platel, master of the grisaille technique. This manuscript became one of the most significant treasures in Louise of Savoy’s illustrious library.
