With splendid illumination by the Spanish panel painter Pedro de Aponte, the Breviary and Missal of Ferdinand the Catholic was created in Naples around 1504-1516. It is named for its patron—Ferdinand V, King of Spain—who is pictured twice in the manuscript, once in the guise of a Roman emperor. It is an unusual Christian liturgical book that integrates texts for the mass with those for the Divine Office on the most solemn feast days. It boasts five full-page miniatures on purple or beige surface-dyed parchment facing half-page miniatures with historiated borders.
We have 1 facsimile edition of the manuscript "Breviary and Missal of Ferdinand the Catholic": Breviario de Fernando El Católico facsimile edition, published by Egeria, S.L.
