The Punishments of Sancho IV manuscript in Madrid is an early fifteenth-century copy of a guide to living a good life compiled more than a century earlier at the order of Sancho IV, King of Castile and León, for the instruction of his young son Ferdinand. Aphorisms and stories of virtuous living and sound leadership drawn from history are brought together to serve as exempla (examples) for the young prince in fifty chapters. Twenty-two unframed paintings depict models of behavior, illustrating scenes from the Christian Bible and ancient history and contemporary life.
