The Book of Fixed Stars of Alfonso the Wise is a stunningly beautiful manuscript catalog of constellations attributed to Alfonso X, "the wise," King of Castile and Leon. Created in northern Italy in the second half of the fourteenth century, the manuscript presents the forty-eight Ptolemaic constellations in forty-six unframed miniatures showing the defining celestial bodies as eight-pointed gold and silver stars on prominent red and blue dots. A Latin-language list of the stars describing their placement within the figure and according to declination ("latitude") and right ascension ("longitude") accompanies each painting.
