The Budapest Esther Scroll, created in Italy in the seventeenth century, is an illuminated scroll of the biblical book of Esther accompanied by a sheet of blessings to be recited before and after the readings from Esther that form a part of the celebration of the Jewish holiday of Purim. Each of the eighteen columns of text is enclosed in painted classical architecture. At the top of each column is either an allegorical figure or a pair of putti—winged children. Narrative scenes from Esther fill the bas-de-pages of the columns of the long scroll.
