The Book on Birds, Fish, and Mammals is a deluxe manuscript copy of a text by the Strasbourg-based fisherman and naturalist Leonhard Baldner. Copied and illuminated in Strasbourg in 1666, it comprises 129 full-page paintings with detailed descriptions of the wildlife Baldner studied in the upper Rhine River valley. Made for Karl Ludwig, Elector Palatine, the manuscript boasts exquisitely naturalistic images of birds, fish, crustaceans, insects, reptiles, and mammals by Johann Walther the Elder.
