Sometimes associated with the Holy Roman Emperor, the Beinecke Hours of Charles V is an exquisitely painted illuminated manuscript produced in early sixteenth-century France. The Christian devotional book of hours contains a calendar, prayers, psalms, and other texts, all lavishly decorated with biblical scenes, portraits of saints, and decorative foliage. The book is remarkable for including a series of portraits of ancient Roman sibyls. The miniatures are set within ornate architectural frames and painted with richly saturated pigments accented with gold.
