The Ars Magna at El Escorial is a sixteenth-century compilation of texts outlining the philosophy of Ramon Llull, who sought to establish proofs of Christian dogma without recourse to scripture. Llull designed the rational systems outlined in the text and the diagrams to serve in converting Muslims and Jews to the perceived truth of Christian belief. His systems of argument are often presented as diagrams. Several of the manuscript's twenty-nine diagrams comprise superimposed geometric shapes that can be moved around a pivot (called volvelles).
