Das einzig erhaltene Königsgebetbuch aus ottonischer Zeit stellt ein Buchdenkmal allerhöchsten Ranges dar. Ganz in Gold auf Purpurgrund geschrieben, diente der Codex Aureus dem kindlichen König als geistiger Leitfaden.
Um 800 an der Palastschule Karls des Großen entstanden, entwickelte sich der Codex Aureus auf Purpurseiten zum bedeutendsten Buch des Mittelalters: als Teil der Reichsinsignien spielte es bei jeder Königskrönung zum römisch-deutschen König eine zentrale Rolle.
Das wertvolle geistliche Gesangsbuch mit Notation entstand 1312 und ist eines der bedeutendsten gotischen Kunstwerke der Schweiz. 71 zierlich gemalte und reich mit Blattgold verzierte Miniaturen und 13 Prachtinitialen schmücken dieses Spitzenstück gotischer Kunst.
Für den französischen König Ludwig IX., den Heiligen, um 1250 geschaffen, gibt diese Bibel fast ausschließlich in Bildern die alttestamentarische Geschichte bis zu König David wieder. Besonders wichtig war Ludwig wohl die Darstellung kriegerischer Szenen, um seinen Kreuzzugsgedanken zu unterstreichen.
